Provenance:
French private collection

A variation of the present composition, of almost equal size, was sold on 9 December 1996 at Tajan, Paris, as lot 26. Pieter Lisaert IV belonged to a prominent family of artists in Antwerp. In 1615 he became master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. He mostly painted religious subjects and was also active as an art dealer.

We are grateful to Dr Jan de Maere for confirming the authenticity of the present painting on the basis of a photograph.
