This decorative still life is very like the works of Pieter Casteels III, a son of the landscape and marine painter, Pieter Casteels II. The younger Casteels resided in London from 1708 onwards. He specialised in decorative floral and animal still lifes, enjoying great success at court and amongst the aristocracy. The peacock which dominates this composition appears in many of his pictures. Casteels was so popular in Great Britain that his art inspired many imitators.
