Abraham Willemsen (Antwerp circa 1610–1672)
St. Anna teaching children to read, with a garden backdrop, monogrammed lower left: A. W. In. F., oil on copper, 59.8 x 77.2 cm, framed
Abraham Willemsen, who was known for a long time by the provisional name of Maître aux Béguins, executed decoratively painted landscapes, mainly on copper, which featured figural scenes from the Bible, as is the case here. His figures are based on those of Peter Paul Rubens, Gerard Seghers and Hendrick van Balen. Willemsen and his workshop worked for the export market to Spain, with the result that many of his works are in Spanish collections.
