Lot No. 172

Elisabetha Spohrer

(Frankfurt/Main before 1790-circa 1825) A pair of still-lifes of flowers in glass vases in front of a classical balustrade, one signed and dated lower right: A. E. Spohrer 1791, oil on canvas, each 32.4 x 22.8 cm, framed

These paintings which were only identified recently are an important addition to the art history of Frankfurt of the 18th century. There are no other known signed works by the talented artist, Elisabetha Spohrer. We know of her primarily from old inventories and very few biographical notes. Born into a wealthy merchant family, she received her training under Johann Daniel Bager. The present pair of paintings is testimony to the mastery of this artist who was probably unable to practice her chosen career for long due to societal conventions, which would account for her very small body of work. As a qualifier, it should also be mentioned that many of her works produced in Bager’s atelier are today attributed to her teacher. Thus it is all the more pleasing that these signed and dated works have been properly identified.
