An exceptional large black ancestral figure.
139 cm high.
Almost life-size, this imposing figure towers above other known ancestral figures. It is blackened with details in red ochre and has none of the lime colouring found on classic Asmat figures. With the finely detailed spinal cord indicated by a snakelike incision and the clear jawand collarbones, it probably represents a mummified ancestor. Early ancestral figures were hung in the men's houses and always show inclined feet, elongated limbs and restrained smiles. (VJ)
