Workshop of Hans Memling | Nativity | Old Master Paintings

One of the most significant Flemish paintings of its time is being auctioned at Dorotheum in April 2016. The nativity by the workshop of Hans Memling is doubtless an important key work that offers new insight into the working methods of Memling's studio towards the end of the master's career.
The charming scene is enclosed within an architectural setting of a ruined stable. The background offers aview into a distant landscape. The painter particularly prepared the individual figures with the art of underdrawing with the ensemble forming a perfect compositional solution. The artist referred to an earlier work from the hand of Memling for the position of the angels, namely to his triptych at the Prado in Madrid.
