A rare and early chair, Michael Thonet,

A rare and early chair, Michael Thonet, - Design

Vienna, c. 1842, manufactured by him at the Clemens List furniture factory, bent laminated wood, polished cherry veneer, original woven cane seat, height 86 cm, width 42.5 cm, depth 43 cm, height of seat 44 cm. (DRAX)

Original condition. Altogether three specimens based on this design are known.

Michael Thonet produced the chair at the Clemens List furniture factory at a time when he was not yet an independent entrepreneur in Vienna running his own factory. The model was a simplified variant of the Boppard type for which Thonet used press moulds he had brought along with him from Boppard. This chair is thus one of the first models realised by Michael Thonet in Vienna.
