Thieme-Becker, vol. XII, p 416: Frémiet Emmanuel, (Paris 6.12.1824-10.9.1910 Paris), one of France's most significant 19th century sculptor, best known for his naturalistic and neoclassical animal sculptures. As a young man, he was supported by his uncle, famous sculptor Francois Rude. His favourite subject were monumental equestrian statues of Gallic or Roman military leaders (e.g. at the Musée d. Antiquités). From his first contribution to the Salon of 1843, a statue of a gazelle, to his equestrian statue of Jean d'Arc Place de Rivoli, 1874, on he went on to the sensational success of "Gorilla abducting a woman" of 1887, at the Nantes Museum, as well as animal sculptures for the Parc du Trocadéro, 1878, and numerous life-sized figures of fighting animals. He also created a fountain for Count Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck for the park of Chateau Neudeck in Upper Silesia.
