Thieme-Becker, vol. 27, p 32, Jean-Bapiste Pigalle, sculptor, (Paris 26.1.1714- 21.8.1785 Paris), son of the Menuisier Jean, a sister, Geneviéve Charlotte, in 1733 married the sculptor Christoph Gabriel Allegrain. Pigalle was apprenticed to. Le Lorrain in 1722, and later studied with J. B. Lemoyne. 1736/49 in Rome, 1744 return to Paris via Lyon, 1744 member of the academy, "Mercury tying his winged sandals", Louvre, 1752 Professeur, 1777 Recteur, 1785 chancellor. Considered the most popular of the 3 main masters.
